3 Sisters Bluegrass Festival · IBMA World of Bluegrass / Bluegrass Live! · October in downtown Chattanooga · About 1 hour from The Canyon at Pond Creek
October is bluegrass month in Chattanooga. Two major events pull national and regional audiences: the free 3 Sisters Bluegrass Festival at Ross’s Landing (traditionally early October) and IBMA World of Bluegrass with the Bluegrass Live! Festival in downtown Chattanooga (mid-to-late October). Between them, the whole city trades ordinary weekends for banjos, mandolins, and outdoor stages. The Canyon at Pond Creek is 1 hour north on the Cumberland Plateau — a real basecamp for the whole month.
Basecamp for a bluegrass weekend
- 1 hour to Ross’s Landing. Direct drive via US-27. Downtown fills up fast for both festivals; the plateau is a quiet 1-hour trip north.
- Room for the crew. Six glamping domes sleeping 4–8 each. Bring the friends, split the driving, share the pickup jams.
- Real quiet after loud downtown nights. Private hot tub on every deck. Dark skies. Fall color on the plateau.
- Peak Cumberland foliage. Bluegrass month is Ozark and Cumberland peak foliage in the same window. The 1-hour drive between festival and basecamp is the trip too.
3 Sisters Bluegrass Festival
The 3 Sisters Bluegrass Festival is a free two-day outdoor festival at Ross’s Landing on the Chattanooga riverfront, traditionally held the first weekend of October. Regional and touring bluegrass acts on outdoor stages, food trucks, family-friendly programming. Free means it draws a big regional crowd — and free means downtown hotels sell out anyway. IBMA World of Bluegrass & Bluegrass Live!
IBMA World of Bluegrass is the International Bluegrass Music Association’s annual conference and awards, paired with the Bluegrass Live! festival in downtown Chattanooga.
