Why Oklahoma City travelers choose Falling Stars

  • 5.5 hours, mostly interstate. I-40 East to Fort Smith, then US-71 North to Fayetteville, then US-62 / US-412 East through the Ozarks to Oakland AR. Most of the drive is interstate; the last 2 hours are scenic mountain road.
  • Bull Shoals is a different category from Eufaula or Tenkiller. Class AAA water clarity (the highest classification — you can see your feet at six feet of depth), 740 miles of mostly undeveloped shoreline, almost no boat traffic. The Oklahoma lakes are great recreation lakes — Bull Shoals is a wilderness lake.
  • Cold water in summer. Bull Shoals runs significantly cooler than Oklahoma reservoirs. Swimming in August feels like a completely different climate.
  • World-class trout fishing on the White River. The tailwater below Bull Shoals Dam runs cold year-round. Brown trout in the 20+ inch range are common. If you fish the Lower Mountain Fork in Broken Bow, you already know what this kind of trout water is like — the White is bigger and more productive.
  • Six geodesic domes with private hot tubs. Aries, Libra, Aquarius, Eclipse, Leo, Capricorn — full kitchenettes, West Elm-style interiors. Not lake-house rentals shared with strangers.
  • Real dark skies. Bull Shoals sits in a near-zero light pollution zone. Milky Way from your hot tub on a clear moonless night.

The drive: Oklahoma City to Falling Stars

OKC to Falling Stars is about 340 miles — most travelers do it in 5.5 hours including a meal stop in Fort Smith or Fayetteville. I-40 East to Fort Smith AR, then US-71 North to Fayetteville, then US-62 / US-412 East to Oakland.

The route passes through NWA (Fayetteville, Bentonville, Rogers) which is its own destination — many guests make a stop in Bentonville for Crystal Bridges Museum on the way out or back. The last 2 hours after Fayetteville are pure Ozark mountain road.

What you do here

On the lake: 740 miles of mostly undeveloped shoreline. Rent a pontoon from a local marina, fish for trophy bass and walleye, swim in cold clean water you can see your feet in. Bull Shoals has the classic Ozark fjord geography — long deep arms tucked between limestone bluffs.

On the White River: The tailwater below the dam is one of the world’s best trout fisheries. Wade-fishable from US-178 — no boat or guide required. A Sunday morning fishing for browns before driving home is a trip in itself.

On property: Hot tub time, dark-sky stargazing, hammock-in-the-woods quiet, slow morning coffee with no neighbors.

Compared to Lake Eufaula: Eufaula is closer (2.5 hours from OKC) and bigger — but it’s a high-volume recreation lake. Busy ramps, party boats, crowded coves in summer. Bull Shoals is 3 extra hours of driving for a meaningfully quieter and cleaner experience.

Compared to Lake Tenkiller: Tenkiller is OKC’s “clear water” default (4 hours) and is genuinely beautiful — but Bull Shoals is bigger, less developed, and the trout fishery is in a different league.

Compared to Broken Bow / Beavers Bend: Broken Bow is OKC’s go-to mountain cabin destination (4 hours) and works for that. Bull Shoals is similar in feel but at a lake scale with the trout tailwater layered on top.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 5.5-hour drive really worth it from OKC?

For a long weekend or fishing trip, yes. For a single overnight, no — go to Eufaula or Broken Bow for that. Bull Shoals is a category change that justifies the longer drive only for multi-day stays.

How does Bull Shoals compare to Tenkiller?

Both are clean Class AAA water lakes, but Bull Shoals is bigger (740 miles of shoreline vs Tenkiller’s 130), less developed, and has the cold-water trout fishery below the dam that Tenkiller doesn’t offer.

How does it compare to Broken Bow?

Same kind of trip — cabin/dome in the mountains near clean water — at a lake scale. If you’ve enjoyed Broken Bow, this is the bigger-water version of the same idea, with a world-class trout fishery on top.

Is the White River trout fishing actually that good?

Yes — internationally regarded. Cold tailwater year-round, brown trout in the 20+ inch range are common, wade-fishable from public access along US-178.

Can I see the Milky Way from the property?

On a clear moonless night, yes — easily. Near-zero light pollution zone.

Can I combine this with a Bentonville / Crystal Bridges stop?

Yes — the route passes through NWA. Many guests stop in Bentonville for Crystal Bridges Museum on the way out or back. Add a half-day to your trip.

Are there restaurants or bars on property?

No. Each dome has a full kitchenette. Oakland and Mountain Home (15-30 minutes away) have local restaurants.

Is this kid-friendly?

The property generally is — lake activities, hiking, stargazing. Specific dome configurations vary; ask at booking which dome best fits your group size.

What about cell service and internet?

Cell is reliable in most spots on the property. Wi-Fi is fast and reliable across all six domes.
